Hugh Hefner the founder and publisher of one of America's most iconic magazine of the 20th century, Playboy has passed away at the age of 91 of natural causes.
Hugh Hefner was more than just the founder of Playboy, he was also a journalist, he was also a World War 2 veteran, philanthropist and a political activist.
Hefner was born into a Midwestern family in Chicago in 1926. During World War 2, he served his country as a member of the military newspaper from 1944-1946. At the end of the war Hefner went on to study at the University of Illinois graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and a double minor in Creative Writing and Art. Once he finished his studies and joined Esquire however after being denied a pay rise in 1953 Hefner left the magazine with the goal to launch his own, Playboy. Originally called Stag Party. Hefner began publishing Playboy in his own kitchen at home in 1953 and it soon became the largest-selling men's magazine in the world, shifting seven million copies a month at its peak.
The first issue featured photos of Marilyn Monroe’s 1949 nude calendar shoot. The first publication was a major success selling over 50,000 copies across the United States. From there, the Playboy empire grew with the company producing one of the most commercially successful magazines of the 20th century. Hefner's new genre of magazine helped make nudity respectable in mainstream publications, despite emerging at a time when US states could legally ban contraceptives.
The magazine's most significant interviewees over the years included civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr and John Lennon from the Beatles. Although impressive sales were certainly driven by glossy colour pictures of nude "playmates", but it also developed a reputation for fine writing, with Kingsley Amis, Kurt Vonnegut, Norman Mailer, James Baldwin, Margaret Atwood Vladimir Nabokov and Ray Bradbury among some of its contributors.
Now the question that is on everyone's mind is 'what kind of funeral does Hugh Hefner have?
Will he have a load of young women following his hurse dressed as Playboy bunnies or will it be more of a somber event?
All we know is that he would of had it all planned far in advanced.
